I have read a few blog posts that talk down about Twitter or Facebook, but those posts aren’t worth linking to because I think they take what one particular group uses social networking for (i.e., as a replacement of face-to-face, time investing friendships) instead of looking at how many are using it. There are many purposes for using social networks, not just as a replacement for real-life friendships.

For instance, I use Facebook to connect with family and friends that I haven’t seen in a while or who live far away. It’s fun to see what they are up to and what phase they are at in their life. But I use Facebook to connect or reconnect with people I already know. I get to see photos of my cousin’s children that I otherwise probably would not have seen. I get to see photos of friend’s weddings that I couldn’t attend or graduations that I couldn’t make it to…a lot of great stuff that I would have never been able to see without Facebook. I know some people will ‘friend’ everyone and anyone, but that’s not why I use Facebook. I think it’s a great tool to keep in touch with people. Just because some people misuse Facebook or use it in a certain way that certain people do not think is healthy does not mean one should write off the whole thing. Read the rest of this entry »
