Every Monday there will be a midrashic fable posted from Louis Ginzberg’s classic collection Legends of the Jews. This week the midrash is about the second day of creation.

We continue reading about the days of creation as understood by later Jewish interpreters. There are several interesting things about the second day of creation as understood here.

First, the ‘firmament’ was most definitely understood as a solid entity by later Jewish interpreters (contra what some modern interpreters clinging to an outdated version of inerrancy would like to say). As oft been pointed out, the later Rabbis concluded that the firmament is no more than three fingers thick, which is interesting to think about how they reached that conclusion!
