So, last night Liz and I were walking through Target to get a movie when we were approached by a couple who asked us something about an academy. To be honest, we both had no idea what they were talking about, so we asked them to repeat themselves. They then asked us if we had ever heard of Holy Mother. I thought they were referring to Mary and they were the Catholic church’s response to door-to-door Mormon missionaries: catch people off guard in a store and ask them about Holy Mother. But, they were not talking about Mary, but about their belief that there was actually a father God and a mother God. I decided to stand there for a bit and listen to their little presentation.
They started by noting the plural used in Genesis 1.26 (“Then God said, “Let us make man in our image…”) and that God then created male and female. Do you know what that means? It means that since male and female were created and they were created in God’s image, God must be both male and female. Not only this, but because God used a plural in Gen 1.26, it must mean that there are two Gods: a mother and a father! That means that we are all their children!
Of course, when I brought up the fact that within the ancient Near Eastern view of gods, the use of a plural, such as “us,” is simply a use of the “Royal We” which the authors used to mirror the view of a divine council in heaven, they simply moved on to a verse in Revelation which talks about the Lamb and the bride coming back to earth. Who is the Lamb? It’s God! And who is the bride? It’s the Holy Mother God! Of course, when I brought up the fact that the Lamb was actually Jesus and the bride was actually the church, they moved onto Galatians 4 and, to be honest, I have no idea what they were talking about.
I told them that I had studied church history and have never, EVER heard anything like what they are talking about. Thousands of years of pastors, bishops, and scholars pouring over Scripture and one thing they have in common is that they never spoke about a Holy Mother God. Seems kind of strange, doesn’t it? (The only thing I could relate their beliefs to within church history was some form of modalism that they were presenting.) I asked them if all those people were going to hell because they didn’t believe in Holy Mother God and they said that God judged those people according to their consciences. So I then asked them why they even tell people about the Holy Mother? If God judges people who haven’t heard about Holy Mother according to their consciences, then why would they tell people about her and run the risk of damning that person for giving them the opportunity to reject her? Wouldn’t they have been better off beforehand?
They were nice people, but completely spiritually deceived. They attempted to use Scripture, but they completely butchered it, jumping from verse to verse as if Paul’s letters should be read in the exact same way as John’s Apocalypse which should both be read in the same way as Genesis 1. They attempted to talk in language that would seem agreeable to a Christian and kept asking me to come to a Bible study that night which was conveniently located right next door.
When Liz and I got back to her house, I googled it and found out that these two nice people were not telling us the whole story. They were attempting to lure us into their Bible study by using terms and phrases that did not seem too strange from a Christian perspective. Come to find out, they were part of the World Mission Society Church of God. The reason they knew about the Holy Mother is because they believe that their founder, Ahn Sang-hong, was the second coming of Christ and he prophesied about her.
I knew these people were a few fries short of a Happy Meal, but I didn’t realize that what they fully believed was this crazy. I started getting hints towards the end of our conversation when the young man told me that he knew the exact date, time, and place that Jesus (read: Ahn Sang-hong) would come back and give us salvation.
So, the moral of the story is that when you are in Target and someone asks you if you have ever heard of the Holy Mother, just tell them that you think Target is sold out of them and keep moving on. If you get in a conversation with them, they will not answer your questions or recognize your points. They just keep jumping around to proof-texts like Jack Van Impe on crack.

Not entirely true…Julian of Norwich in his 1373 Revelation of Divine Love spoke of God as a Mother. However, you are right in that theologians throughout the history of the Church have not spoken of a separate deity alongside of God who is the Holy Mother God.

Jake: I haven’t read Julian, but remember hearing about his attribution of God as mother in my course on the medieval church. In many ways, he was following orthodoxy, which has always noted that God does not have a sex, but is spirit. Any description of God as male or female are simply anthropomorphisms. Julian was also following Scripture, which provides metaphors for God as a type of mother:
—a mother suckling her children (Num 11.12)
—a mother who does not forget the child she nurses (Is 49.14-15)
—a mother who comforts her children (Is 66.12-13)
—a mother who births and protects Israel (Is 46.3-4)
—a mother who gave birth to the Israelites (Deut 32.18)
—a mother who calls, teaches, holds, heals and feeds her young (Hosea 11.1-4)
—a female bird protecting her young (Pss 17.8, 36.7, 57.1, 91.1, 4; Is 31.5; Deut 32.11-12)
You are correct in noting that I was thinking in terms of anyone in church history who spoke about both a Father God and a Mother God as separate deities.
They might also be found Wal-Marts, CVSs, or grocery stores. So shop wisely!

I think all Christian denominations 30000+ of them who follow Paul and his mythical theological philosophy imported from the pagans has got it wrong. Paul’s life account is dubious in my opinion and scholars have given their opinion on that. I don’t want to start Paul’s bashing here. My focus is primarily on Jesus and Mary whom I love. I have got no concern with Paul.
Paul never was trained as a disciple by Jesus. He was not among the twelve, it is very obvious. Paul never knew the concepts of Jesus and Mary and he never cared for them. It is on record that he was a dead enemy of Jesus and his followers.
When Jesus got miraculously saved by GodAllahYHWH a cursed death on Cross, and he went into exile towards the East. Perhaps Paul knew it and he put on a new coat of animosity of spoiling simple teachings of Jesus. This is what I understand; others are free to differ with me but with good reasons. I respect your faith.

Paul states that we all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. However, it is faith in Christ, who lived a perfect life, died for our sins, rose again for our justification, and ascended into heaven to sit at the right hand of God, that makes us right with God.
I am so thankful that I do not have to live according to the law, but according to the Spirit, being led by faith to be continually transformed into the image of Christ.
I hope that you come to the realization that it is Christ’s sacrifice, not our own righteousness, that saves us. If you want to hear more about the Gospel taught by Jesus and Scripture, please let me know.

I am/was a member of the COG. My father always had suspicion of the teachings I was taught and he finally did some research and showed me all these websites that label COG as a cult. This news is so hurtful and feels like a total slap in the face. I believed with my whole heart what I was taught and now that I learned the truth I don’t know what to do. I want to be close with god and receive his salvation but if I was so easily mislead when I tried to find God, how do I know it won’t happen again.

Rachel, Any group of people that insist you get baptised before know much of anything of their group should be considered misleading. I don’t know of any “mainstream” religion that would do that. Most insist that you discuss your “conversion” in great length with your family members and do alot of soul searching before any decision is made. Don’t consider it a slap in the face, consider it a learning experience, and you are better off for it. I’m glad your family is no longer going thru what I have been going thru for almost 4 years. Rachel, just because there are people opposed to the Church of God, does not mean it is a cult. Should you listen to what people say or what God says?
Anybody can label any organization a “cult”. Looking at the definition, we can label the early church that followed Jesus Christ as a cult.
People like Mommadukes and the likes do not believe in the prophecies of the Bible. Why would you listen to these type of people? If you believe what you saw in the Bible, then follow it. There are many people in the world who are are opposed to the truth and do everything they can to decieve you.
They tell lies about the Church of God, just like 2000 years ago. People opposed to the Church of God 2000 years ago made up lies that Jesus had not really resurrected but rather the guards were paid off and removed his body from the tomb to make it “look” like he resurrected.
Examine the Bible, not the opinions and lies of opposers. If you do so, you will make the right choice. You have your own mind and spirit. Think for yourself.

Is the age of the Father Jehovah? No because it is the past already. Is it the age of the Son Jesus? Look here! My wifes ex-husband is apart of this b/s. I know plenty of people who have been INVITED to this church. When you get there, women sit on one side of the church and men sit on another. Women are not aloud to speak unless spoken to. They also must wear veils. They put a newborn in one. How safe is that? Anyway, We let her ex get visitation for a month back in july. First off my step-daughter is a very happy, friendly, out going child. When she got back and having been forced to be apart of this group she was not the same. Very timid. And said that she never wanted to go back. On saturdays you start church at 5 am til 10 pm. They are very strict with children going to the bathroom. Also you must say a prayer before every drink you take. People who have gone to there and decided not to go back are conciderd spitually dead. Her bio father being part of this church has told his daughter (a 4 yr old) that her brother that past away (mine and her moms son) wasnt aloud to live because he was a bad chrube and that he deserved to die. Anyway my whole point is that this church will cause familys to break-up. I know people whose family has turned thier backs on them because they did not whant to be apart of this church. Sorry but just cause my parents go to a differnt church than I does not mean that I deem them spiritually dead, and want nothing to do with them. Just beware of these people and their b/s. They want your money.

Let me attempt to say this a different way so you might be able to understand.
Slavery is first century Palestine was not based on race, did not steal people from other lands to enslave them, was paid, slaves could earn their freedom, and they could own land, houses, and employ their own workers.
Does that sound anything like slavery in America?
Nope.
And that is my point. By equivocating the two you reveal your own ignorance.
Do yourself and everyone else a favor and do a little research before you start spewing out your cultic bull crap.

So art, you support slavery just as Jesus Christ did. Slavery is slavery by any definition of the word. So your saying just because it’s modern day, the Bible is no longer in effect? I’m pretty sure that it is in effect until Judgement Day. So art, thanks for claiming you support slavery. You are really a true follow of Jesus Christ.

You asked me if I supported slavery, referring to modern slavery, because, according to you, Jesus supports this type of slavery.
I pointed out your ignorance in equivocating what was called slavery in first century Palestine with modern slavery.
Then you claim that I support slavery because slavery is always the same, no matter what history, data, or facts say otherwise.
Is that a fair assessment of the discussion so far?
Can you now see why you are acting utterly foolish and completely ignorant of the actual facts.

2) You think we should have slavery because you think Jesus is gung-ho for it.

Thats simply false Elijah –
Slavery in the first century was often a means to pay a debt. Slaves actually had a higher social status than the beggars. It was oftena desireable position for the extremely poor because it meant you would eat that night and that your family would at least be given food. Your argument lacks merit because your assumption that “slavery is slavery” is wrong.
For instance, black african slavery in africa (which still continues to this day) is more about tribal warfare than about industrial competition. It serves as a means of bringing peace between communities. When two communities fight they will often exchange lower members of their societies as slaves to bring peace. This is a very different relationship than post Dred Scot black-african slavery in the west.
It is important to nuance, which to date you are not doing.

Hi to the people who are in the church of God! I admire that you are well verse of the bible and indeed you are passionate of what you believe in, I respect your faith for even God gave us the free will to chose between Right and Evil. But let me tell you of what is happening to my life right now and my fiance who is in the Chruch of God.
1. My fiance and I went to America with dreams and ambition, but now she doesnt even care with her legal status and getting a job, as she said its an earthly desire. To accumulate money is very earthly, to get a job is earthly to buy food and pay your rent is earthly! how can you get a job if you can only work for 4 days!
2. Me and my fiance had planned before, seeing us growing old together and having kids in a simple house. But now she lost interest of having a family and even with me. All she talks about are her sisters in the church and 2012. I could not see myself in her future anymore. She says “God bless you to everyone” but I could not even feel her love…
3. She undervalued her family and named them us unsaved souls, her sisters in Church are more impontant to her. She dont get involved anymore with family concerns and less attention to her aging parents… but its ok…as what you all claim your personal salvation is far more important than your family! they are just unworthy unsaved souls…Your attention should be in the church for 7 days… saturday and tuesday mandatory, sunday for preaching and the rest of the days bible study during the evening. Its very important than the birthday of your bilogical father.
4. YOUMUST ATTEND SATURDAY AND SUNDAY OR ELSE YOU WILL NOT RECIEVE SALVATION. I am a doctor, you cant prevent stat or emergency operations to fall on a saturday! I did asked one of your members …she answered me with a question ” Is your salvation Important to you!”. I am aware that on a saturday the whole day we stay in the church 3 services! lets say one of the members got choked cant you do your job?
5. Regarding to family issues, Zang Gil-Jah ( mother God) promulgates civic and humanitarian works that is why you were awarded by the Korean Goverment. She quoted in one of her interviews while giving gifts on a new year to american soldiers in Korea:
“I felt sorry for them living so far apart from their families,” Zahng said Thursday. “So I wanted to share this warmth with them.”
If she herself was concern about american soldiers in korea being away from their family… then why are you promoting your member to be away from their families… You dont have the right to question my statement as that is how I and my fiance’s family experienced with the current situation! You said earthly family is a reflection to the heavenly family… you should not forsake the unbelievers of your faith as we love so much your member…As I love so much my fiance!
6. Enjoyment of life in the present moment means as earthly attachment! YOu are trying to say that if you will be happy because you went out for a movie or you dine with close firends means you are earthly! I dont get it! and be honest to yourselves when was the last time you spent time with your family or loveones…to your members whom I know none… because they say its earthly!
7. When you preach you always startwith a lie… we ask who is christ ahn sang hong, then you answer us that we are not in the position even to say his name…We believe the bible BUT HOW WILL WE KNOW THAT THE MAN THAT WE REFER AS GOD IS GOD, IF YOU DONT EVEN TRY TO TELL US WHO HE IS! YOU ARE NO DIFFERENCE WITH THE FRIARS! YOU WANT US TO GET CONVERTED IN THE NAME OF THE PERSON WHO WE EVEN DONT KNOW! THE RULE IS YOU GET BAPTIZED THEN THEY WILL SHOW YOU THE PICTURES OF THE MOTHER GOD! ITS NOT FAIR ENOUGH!
Dont represent yourself that you are college students because most of you are working already! and dont tell people you dont have a website, yes you do but its only for the members of the church! REMEMBER GOD SAID TELL THE WORLD OF MY LOVE THE GREATEST LOVE THE WORLD HAVE KNOWN! so no need to hide it! if there is nothing to hide.
8. I tried so hard to understand the situation of my fiance but she has different perspective towards life already! I am doing my best to comprehend what she is looking right now…but she is not spending time with me anymore… she says I LOVE YOU more to her sisters in church than to me!
9. I asked her to come with me and stay in other area but she cannot live her sisters.
I did not give up, but she did! She ended our 5 years relationship in which we are supposed to get married by 2010, as I am becoming a hindrance for HER SALVATION! As what she qouted!
You may see my beloved in the streets,shops,train station and malls please tell her that I am an unworthy unsaved soul who is still inloved to a girl who is a member of the CHURCH OF GOD!
