evangelism: the search for balance in perspectives

I have been thinking more about evangelism since it was the topic of this week’s “say what?!?” More specifically, I have been thinking about the way to evangelize in a postmodern culture. There has been a shift in thinking (reflected by Karen Ward’s statement) and practice in the task of evangelism from ‘word’ or ‘proposition’ oriented evangelism to ‘friendship’ or ‘life’ evangelism. The former is focused on evangelism techniques, memorizing the Roman’s road, and wearing colored beads on your wrists in order to share with someone the way to go to heaven when they die. The latter is focused on living out the love that Christ has given to us in hopes that people will see the love of Christ in our lives and want to become part of the community of Jesus. Both, I believe, are missing the complete picture of what it means to both be a Christian and be evangelistic.
